“peers admit that 'you have to get up pretty early to catch them out!'…Employers find the team…'understand the commercial reality and take a risk analysis approach to discussions.'”

Chambers UK, 2008

Employment law is constantly changing as case law and UK and EU social policy evolves. We work with clients on proactive reviews of their employment policy to ensure they adopt up-to-the-minute employment practices. We produce imaginative and practical responses to the impact of new law on our clients' businesses.

We advise on a wide range of both contentious and non-contentious employment matters, including the:

  • employment aspects of acquisitions and disposals, flotations and all commercial transactions
  • impact of EU legislation on UK employment matters
  • terms of engagement of employees - especially key senior personnel
  • dismissal of employees and employment disputes, including breach of contract and restrictive covenants
  • strands of discrimination, equal pay and the increasingly regulated areas of working time, health and safety and 'family-friendly' policies
  • review of clients' employment practices and policy
  • Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations ("TUPE"), collective redundancies and employee consultation

We regularly prepare cases for the Employment Tribunal and High Court and have taken cases to the Court of Appeal. Where appropriate our lawyers represent the client at the Tribunal.

The majority of employment disputes settle prior to a hearing and so the group has considerable experience in negotiating settlements and resolutions including through the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service ("ACAS") and, we anticipate, through the newly introduced dispute resolution procedures.
